I awake to pain and clench my fists, jolting when a soft hand covers one of mine.

“It’s okay,” my mate soothes me, and I wonder if I’m dreaming. “You’re being fixed up. You’ll be just fine soon.”

I can hear the strain in her voice, and I fight to open my eyes. Her face is pale, bruises stark on her jaw.

“Heal her.” My voice is rough and weak, and I curse myself for not being faster. My people could have lost their leader because of my stupidity.

Her eyes widen in disbelief. “Don’t be ridiculous. They’re still fixing your stomach. You almost bled out…” She removes her hand, but I catch it before she can pull away.

I raise her hand to my lips and ignore the pull on my stomach as her eyes meet mine.

“Do this one thing for me,” I cajole, and she smiles faintly.

“I’ll let them use their magic wand on me just as soon as you’re all patched up.”

I shift uncomfortably at a flash of pain, and the world swims dizzily as the edges of my flesh begin to knit back together.

“Hurts, huh?” Harlow’s cool hand sweeps along my forehead, and for once, it’s as if all the negative feelings between us are gone.

“Kiss me.”

She raises her eyebrow. “You’re injured, Mr. Smooth.”

“I want to feel my mate’s lips on mine before I must deal with my men.”

She leans over and brushes her lips over my own, and I reach up, catching the back of her head as she moves away and pulling her back down for more.

Harlow smiles against my lips and then shifts away.

“How bad?” I ask Kehas. He is my mother’s favorite healer and one of the best Arcav healers I know.

Kehas frowns. “You’re lucky,” he says. “A little longer and you would have lost more blood than we could replace.”

“How are my men?”

He shifts. “Three of the guards protecting the humans lost their lives, and there were four fatalities from those taken by surprise in the southeast quadrant.”

“And Methi?”

Harlow looks away, chewing on her lip. “Methi may lose his arm. I used a tourniquet. It’s what I would’ve done on a human, but it might’ve been the wrong choice…”

Kehas lays a hand on her shoulder, and I grit my teeth. He has a mate, I tell myself. He’s simply comforting his queen.

“You did the right thing,” he says. “We don’t know if Methi would have lost too much blood in the time it took to get him to his healer.”

She nods, but I can tell she doesn’t believe him, and I shift in frustration.

“When can I leave this bed?”

Kehas looks down his nose at me. “You need to rest, Your Majesty. You lost a lot of blood, and if you fall, you may reopen your newly healed wound.”

I push myself up. “I need to speak to my men. This shouldn’t have happened.”

Harlow leans over and pushes me back down, and I bare my teeth at her.

She simply smirks. “I’ve got a feeling I could take you on and win right now, tough guy.
